In the year 1864 Frankenhauser, in dealing with the nerve supply to the uterus, first described the plexus which now bears his name. It is, as is of course well known, a sympathetic plexus lying lateral to, and on each side of the uterus, and enveloped by the broad ligament. Two large ganglia are present, a right and a left, the ganglia cervicalia uteri. Until recently these ganglia have attracted relatively little attention as their morphological appearance is that of ordinary sympathetic ganglia of the abdominal cavity. Blotevogel, however, imbued with the conception of oestrus, pregnancy, and castration as "total phenomena" of the whole organism rather than occurrences in an isolated system, sought for some
